MORE than 1000 jobs at the Babcock Rosyth shipyard could be under threat if the Ministry of Defence approves a contract to allow a controversial US firm to oversee the (pounds) 4bn construction of the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers.

Halliburton, the company once headed by Dick Cheney, the US vice president, is one of three bidders for the assembly of the 60,000- tonne warships via its Kellogg, Brown and Root subsidiary.
