Summary

HARRY Reid describes America as "by far the most powerful nation that has ever existed" (January 24), which is true only if you believe that power resides in the ability to blow up the planet - yourselves included. What is the US able to do about North Korea or Iran? Countries run by foul bampots with their hands on or near nuclear weapons. Nothing - because they cannot even control Iraq which the British in the 1930s controlled with a couple of RAF squadrons.

What is true about the US is that it is the greatest debtor nation in history. When Britain was "top nation" in the nineteenth century, she was also the principal creditor and money probably had more influence than armies and navies. The US owes more to the rest of the world than any other country in history. Is this a position of strength?
