Summary

SEEING the refurbished Old Fruitmarket open on Friday 13 was too tempting for the hex that seems to be haunting the thirteenth Celtic Connections. One tune into Lunasa's set, the fire alarm sounded, sending a sell-out attendance on to the streets outside.

Efficient handling of the situation meant only a relatively brief inconvenience and the Irish quintet continued with frontman-f lautist Kevin Crawford jesting that they would now add "played to two full houses at Celtic Connections 2006" to their CV. I wouldn't correct them because they played on in sometimes trying circumstances. Theirs may be a brand of traditional music that can pull people out of their seats, but whether it's suitable for a standing audience - and a standing audience with a bar in the same room, at that - is another matter.
