OVERALL turnout in the election hit a record low of less than 45% but the UK defied EU trends and increased voter participation.

Across the country, where in 1999 turnout was the lowest in Europe at 24.8%, turnout was up to 38.2%, lifted by the council votes last week. In Scotland, 30.7% of those eligible turned out to vote.
