Welsh cele- brations of Test victories are rarely inconvenienced by humility or a sense of perspective, so few of their supporters who filled Edinburgh's bars on Saturday evening would have been troubled by the thought that their team had encountered such a feeble Scotland side that they would still have won by a street with a backline made up of Katherine Jenkins, Nerys Hughes and a couple of Stereophonics.

Whether things would have looked quite so comfortable without James Hook at fly-half is far less certain. Hook's role as the prodigal son, returning to a starting position he had last occupied almost two years ago, was emphasised by the picture on the front page of Saturday's Western Mail, which showed his No.10 shirt hanging on a nail, waiting for him to fill it. And fill it he did.
