WHEN James Marsh arrived at the Academy Awards in 2009 he found himself presented with the bet of a lifetime.

Sitting in the row in front of him was Werner Herzog, whose Encounters at the End of the World was one of the films vying with Marsh's Man on Wire for a statuette. Herzog turned to the British director and said: "I'll bet you my house that you've won." Herzog's house or an Oscar: the very definition of a win-win bet? Marsh took the wager and won the Oscar.
