THERE are "Golden Miles" all over the world - from Hong Kong to Blackpool, and from Marbella to Melbourne. But never having seen any of these cities, my first glimpse of Durban's Golden Mile - as it stretched below us after a five-day drive from the then Northern Rhodesia in 1966 - was one I'll never forget.

It was also the first time I had seen the sea, which stretched seemingly forever behind the skyscrapers dotting the horizon.
