On his arrest picture, James Brown is worn and wrinkled, his clothes untidy and his hair hilariously - probably deliberately - unkempt. The hardest-working man in showbusiness has, in the end, become the most dishevelled. The man known as Mr Dynamite, who once proudly proclaimed "it's about making the kids love the family more, love mum and dad more" was, two days ago, arrested in South Carolina on suspicion of domestic violence.

According to a police report, Brown pushed his wife, Tomi Rae, 33, to the floor in a bedroom of their Beech Island house. Rae, it is reported, fell clumsily on to a pile of luggage before Brown held a chair over her head and "threatened to kill her". She was taken to hospital for treatment to scratches and bruises on her arm and hip.
