THE statement, Water cannon may be used at G8 (February 12), and that they have not before this been used in mainland Britain, is another inglorious first for Scotland.

But I do not think that if the cannon are used it will be mainly to drown or soak Scottish protesters or protesters from other places, but mainly to establish a first use on mainland Britain, so that they can subsequently be used on rent protesters or others who might feel they are being treated unfairly in society. If used, they should not be lightly accepted by us British. It is another major blow at our democratic rights to protest, and we have few such rights left under this government, and certainly not free speech. But again Scotland is the "test area" for cannon.
