I WAS interested to read Anne Simpson's article on Councillor Charles Gordon, the leader of Glasgow City Council (January 18). Over the weeks I have read his views on whether begging should be allowed on the streets of Glasgow.

I have a fair degree of sympathy with his views that a halt should be put to such practices. For a total of 35 years I was a Glasgow councillor, and a council leader in the late 1970s. The subject of begging came up a number of times. During my period on Glasgow Corporation I was persuaded by the deputy editor of the then Evening Citizen to be disguised as a beggar - the paper supplied the gear and a guitar. I started off in George Square.
