MIKE Dailly is always going to argue that his profession should keep its monopoly (Letters, December 29) and he clearly is very sensitive about anyone offering to compete with solicitors. I wonderwhy.

Conveyancing fee restrictions were removed by the Law Society because of the threat of competition from licensed conveyancers, not because his profession felt generous to the people of Scotland. I thinkMrDailly is being a bit hysterical. Sections 25 to 29 only allow interested bodies to apply to compete with solicitors; they have to be vetted by the Scottish Executive and the lord president before this can take place so his concerns over standards would be met. In England the lord chief justice is on record as having praised legal executives (a body granted rights under the English legislation) for the service that they offer people.
