NICK SMITH, reserve for Great Britain's Olympic gold medal relay squad last year, is determined to go one better this summer, despite having been dropped by the coach who got him to Athens.

Until two months ago, the 21-year-old Fifer was coached by Stuart Hogg, former pro sprinter and adviser to numerous football clubs, most recently Aberdeen. Under his guidance, Smith improved dramatically, from 10.49 in 2002 to 10.28 last year.
