Andy Manley is thinking back. You can - and this is one of the reasons Manley is an ideal purveyor of theatrical goodies for young children - see the memory-sifting process in his face. A slight furrowing of the brow, a faraway look in the eyes, the glimmerings of a smile and the broad grin that says: "Got it!" In a matter of seconds, he's spooled back to when he first performed in what is now the Bank of Scotland Imaginate Festival.

He reckons it was 1992, in a show called Bill's New Frock. The festival itself was just beginning to establish an identity, and Manley's own career was tied up in a bold new venture as one of the founding talents behind the Visible Fictions theatre company. But to be honest, back then the whole sphere of theatre work for children and young people didn't carry much clout in Scotland, and shows specifically for the very early pre-nursery years were rarer still.
