They led from the first stroke, with China, who finished second, leading the pack. South Africa moved up from fifth place at 500 metres to overtake France and then Italy to grab the third and last available final slot.

World champions New Zealand won the other semi-final in a time marginally slower than the British duo to set up a repeat of last year's final when Glover and Stanning took silver behind New Zealand. The crews meet in today's final and Stanning said: "That's one job done; the time wasn't particularly quick, but we did the job we needed to do."
