Three victims of a mining accident were officially remembered yesterday, 47 years after their deaths. In a field on the edge of Airdrie a memorial cairn was unveiled for Alexander Kinnaird, Thomas Laing and James Walker. The men died on September 22, 1939, in what became known as the Mosside mining disaster. At a dedication service attended by many relatives and the one living survivor of the accident, Provost Edward Cairns said: "Forty-seven years may have passed, but for some the memory of that tragic event has not faded." However, Mr John Young, from Craigneuk, Airdrie, who escaped the flood waters that day, felt the tribute should have been made a long time ago.
